Most enrichment data is already free. Here is which parts actually cost money.

The four layers of company data, and the order to run them in

The thing that finally broke me was watching a credit counter tick down while a tool looked up companies and returned nothing. Not wrong data. Nothing. The row came back empty and the credit was gone anyway.

Enrichment sounds like one thing. It is really four, and they have wildly different costs.

Layer one is what the company publishes about itself. The title tag, the description, emails and phone numbers on the page, and the technology stack, because the page source gives it away. WordPress leaves fingerprints everywhere. So do Shopify, HubSpot, Intercom and most booking widgets. A company with a booking widget sells appointments. One running WooCommerce sells products online. You just learned two qualifying facts without a database.

Layer two is what their infrastructure reveals. The MX record says who handles their email, which tells you which integrations they can accept. It also tells you whether their email works at all, and running that check before a campaign protects your sending reputation, which is the one asset in cold email you cannot buy back.

Layer three is inference, and this is where most people point AI in the wrong direction. Asking a model what industry a company is in, given only its name, produces confident guesses. Asking the same model while handing it the company's own website text produces an answer grounded in evidence.

Layer four is what someone else collected and sells you. Direct dials. Verified personal emails. Funding data. That is worth paying for. The mistake is paying for it first, on rows that were never qualified.

Run your pipeline cheapest to most expensive and gate every step on the one before it. Clean, derive, retrieve, infer, then buy. On a real 598 row list that meant removing 114 junk rows before a single lookup ran, deriving 483 websites from email addresses at zero cost, and only then letting the AI columns read real text.

Most of what you were paying for turns out to have been free all along.
